MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Dozens of CMS parents met with the school board to discuss House Bill 514 Wednesday night. The state legislation would allow the towns of Matthews and Mint Hill to create their own charter schools.

This meeting also comes after Matthews Town Commissioner and CMS Board Member Sean Strain proposed compromise for the bill that’s caused a rift between the two boards.

In exchange for not supporting HB514, Matthews Town commissioners would support a bill for a $1.8 billion bond for statewide school projects and receive a commitment from CMS to replace trailers at Matthews schools with new construction in the next five years and to build a new school in the town in the next 10 years.

School board chair Mary McCray said a majority of the compromise comes from previous discussions between the two boards except one that would allow Matthews commissioners to "approve student assignment changes".

At this time, we don't know when the two boards will make a final decision about the compromise.
