WILMINGTON, N.C. -- New Hanover Regional Medical Center saw 172 opioid overdoses last year in the emergency room.

North Carolina Insurance commissioner Mike Casey met with NHRMC staff Friday to discuss the opioid crisis. One of the programs that seems to be working is the N.C. Stop Act. That’s the act that limits the amount of opioids doctors can prescribe.

“We’ve seen about a 10 percent reduction and it’s just initial, but we expect with our efforts to continue to drive this down,” said Laurie Whalin, NHRMC.

NHRMC is hosting a medication disposal event Saturday in six counties. For a full list of locations and more information, click here.
