RALEIGH -- A Durham woman is facing an assault charge after she was accused of punching and cursing at an airport police officer.

  • Evian Villegas faces three charges in all.
  • Villegas attempted to get on a flight without a ticket.
  • She was removed from the courtroom after a profanity laced outburst.

It happened at Raleigh-Durham International Airport last week when 39-year-old Evian Villegas refused to leave the ticket counter after being told that she did not have a ticket and could not fly with her dog.

Villegas made her first court appearance Monday and immediately tried to plead guilty to disorderly conduct.

She faces three charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

In court, Villegas interrupted as the judge assigned her a public defender.

She then began yelling curse words and claiming that she wasn't able to make a phone call upon being arrested.

Bailiffs then grabbed Villegas and escorted her out of the courtroom.

According to the arrest warrant, it appears neither Villegas nor her pet had tickets to get on the airplane.

Southwest's policy does allow small dogs or cats on board in certain situations.
