CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC-Chapel Hill announced Monday that it received a $10 million commitment from the John William Pope Foundation.

The huge gift will support “For All Kind: the Campaign for Carolina” which is the largest fundraising campaign in the university's history with a goal of $4.2 million.

Most of that money will go to UNC's Lineberger Cancer Center to help train future oncologists and cancer researchers.

Almost $4 million will go toward the philosophy, politics and economics program. It’s one of Carolina's most popular minors which the university plans on elevating to a major.

Another $1 million will go to UNC's track-and-field program to create two in-state scholarships.

The rest of the money will go to the UNC Horizons program that helps women and children break the cycle of addiction and poverty.

“I am so grateful for this wonderful gift from the Pope Foundation,” said Chancellor Carol Folt. “They are providing much needed support in critical areas from growing educational programs to fighting disease to supporting our student-athletes. Taken together, this gift will touch our students and faculty, promoting their success, leadership and impact in North Carolina and beyond.”

The Pope Foundation receives its support from the Pope family, the owner and operator of the Variety Wholesalers.
