CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte has officially submitted its bid for the 2020 Republican National Convention.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) says they are looking forward to the competitive process and thanks the support from the city.

City councilmember Ed Driggs, who worked closely with CRVA to finalize the city's bid, says it was a bipartisan effort.

“People on the host committee are leaders from the other party and business leaders from both parties,” says Drigs. “This is an effort for Charlotte, it’s not about politics.”

From here, it's a waiting game. If Charlotte moves on in the selection process, Driggs says the RNC will invite some prospective host cities for interviews in Washington D.C. followed by site visits from RNC officials.

“We've done a convention, and we were successful when we did it. We're also a purple state so politically, it’s opportune for Republicans to come here,” says Driggs.

Driggs doesn’t know which other cities are in the running for the 2020 convention.

In 2012 Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention.
