After an afternoon of sunshine and 80-degree temperatures for many across the Piedmont, Tuesday will feature one more day of unseasonable warmth before a cold front moving through Wednesday brings a chance for showers, storms, and then colder air to follow in its wake.

A warm front lifting northward Tuesday will bring winds back out of the south, allowing for temperatures to warm right back into the 70s to low 80s. High and mid-level clouds will be on the increase today as more moisture moves in behind this front, but all should remain dry through the day. A cold front approaching from the west will cause winds to pick up a bit, particularly by late this afternoon.

The aforementioned cold front is slated to start moving into the mountains just before daybreak Wednesday and then clear to the east of I-77 by noon. In the meantime, as this system sweeps through the region, we'll look for a line of showers moving from the mountains into the lower elevations through the first half of Wednesday -- some of which may be embedded with some garden-variety thunderstorms.

Cool and dry air will quickly follow behind the front by late Wednesday, allowing for winds to become blustery out of the northwest in the mountains, where Wind Advisories will go into effect and last into early Thursday for Ashe and Watauga counties.

High pressure building in Thursday through Friday will result in a dry but cooler end to the work week as highs cool back into the low to mid/upper 60s.
