CHARLOTTE -- More than 100 parents and students from the Charlotte Women's March are taking two buses to Washington, D.C. for the national March For Our Lives demonstration this weekend.

The event is a call to action organized by students for improved school safety and gun control.

“We're seeing the kids say, this is not normal, this is not ok, i'm not going to grow up like this and i think as parents we're trying to support that,” said Gina Navarrete, Charlotte Women’s March organizer

Navarrete said the first bus sold out in a week and the second one is almost full.

She also hopes her son and other students learn a valuable lesson from the experience

“You know what I hope is what every parent wants which is I want my child to know his voice matters and he can make a difference,” said Navarrete.

The group will leave for DC late Friday night and return to Charlotte Sunday morning.

A group of Charlotte high school students is also planning a March For Our Lives event this Saturday at 11a.m. starting at First Ward Park in Uptown.
