CHARLOTTE -- CMPD has a new program to better identify officers who may commit excessive force.

It's called the Early Intervention System.

CMPD looks at an officer's history and identifying patterns. For example, the types of calls they respond to, their attendance record and whether they have a second job.

If it looks like an officer has a lot of stresses or potential issues, an alert is sent to the officer's superiors.

Since November, 27 alerts have gone out.

Some officers didn't need help while others received counseling or training.

"We as an organization value that trust and transparency. We want to provide you with the absolute best police services available," said CMPD Capt. Mark Santaniello.

CMPD partnered with the University of Chicago on the Early Intervention System. According to the department, it's the first police agency in the country to use the system.
