CHARLOTTE -- Seven children were bitten by a stray dog inside their school on Monday at Lansdowne Elementary School in Charlotte.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care & Control, a call was received around 1:30 p.m.

The stray dog entered the playground while children were outside. School staff members managed to bring the children inside; however, the stray pit bull followed them into the school.

Officials say the children's shouting and running overstimulated the dog which caused him to jump up and bite some of them.

Seven children sustained minor injuries, but none were hospitalized.

The pit bull, named "Bro," did have a collar and tag and was up-to-date on all vaccinations. Officials were able to contact the owner who retrieved the dog from the school.

The incident remains under investigation.
