RALEIGH -- Senator Thom Tillis says he is deeply disturbed if he was misled by a vendor during his run for congress.

This statement comes after a national firestorm over election-time data mining, and a Facebook ban for the company he is tied to.

When you logged on to your Facebook account prior to the 2014, you may have been one of the more than 50 million users who was having their personal information analyzed. A Russian professor sold information to Cambridge Analytica, based on that data. That information was used to create micro-targeting data for candidates, like Thom Tillis, who went on defeat Senator Kay Hagan.

Facebook asked Cambridge Analytica to take down the information, which it said it did, but now several years later, Facebook has banned the company, and red flags are being raised for folks associated with company.

In light of all of these questions, the state Democratic Party says that they believe that both Senator Tillis and the State Republican Party have questions they need answered.

"We must know the extent that the North Carolina Republican Party helped this firm steal, weaponize and exploit people's private information,” says Wayne Goodwin, NC Democratic Party Chair.

Goodwin says he wants to know how deep the ties were between now Senator Thom Tillis, the State Republican Party, and cambridge analytics.

For his part, Tillis released a statement Tuesday saying:

"Cambridge Analytica was one of many vendors that provided limited services during my campaign. However, they were not our digital vendor and they have ceased to be a vendor for my campaign for more than three years. My expectation is that all services provided to my campaign are lawful – regardless of who provides them, including third parties. If we were misled by a vendor, that would be deeply disturbing.”

But for the head of the State Republican Party, he says he believes this is a lot of concern about nothing being pushed by Democrats.

“You know at some point the Democrats are going to have to accept they ran a bad candidate, that people didn't like and didn't want to vote for, and that's why they lost.” says Dallas Woodhouse, NC GOP Executive Director. “They did not lose because of some mythical creature dug up under a rock or these magical characters and conspiracy theories.”

The Massachusetts attorney general has opened an investigation into Facebook and Cambridge Analytica over questions of this data mining.
