CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A UNC Charlotte student was arrested and removed from campus after making threats to shoot up the school.

Matt Saavedra has been charged with falsely reporting mass violence on an educational property, which is classified as a class one felony.

Police say he was arrested in Forsyth County since that is where the threats were made on March 8.

Recent search warrants show police seized several items from his apartment including a school emergency response guide with active shooter plans posted on his wall. They also found blueprints of four academic buildings on campus and two notebooks that included writings on why he wanted to commit a school shooting.

"I think our police force acted very rapidly and I think this is someone that needs help. And I think through the arrest warrant, we'll actually be able to get him the help that he needs," UNCC Provost Dr. Joan Lorden said.

Saavedra was checked in a mental health facility before being arrested, police say.

Officials say the State Bureau of Investigation and the Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosive agency is assisting.
