WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Kids in the Park is a program designed to get people off the couch and on the move.

The idea to reconnect kids with nature started on the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina, the most visited national park unit in the country.

Director of the program, Jason Urroz says, "Getting kids and families unplugged and outdoors and reconnected to nature,” is their goal.

He says less families were going to the parkway, so they started Kids in the Park as a way to get people outdoors.

The program is made up of mostly hiking trails, but the launch in Winston-Salem is one of the first biking trails with a 7-mile loop around Salem Lake.

With a reward system in place, about 400,000 kids have hiked and biked different trails since the program started about 8 years ago. With different stations along the trails, kids can collect codes that will later earn them a prize.

Kids bring their own bikes and adults who are along for the ride can use a park bike. The charge is waived when they enter their Kids in the Park access code.
