High pressure will take the reins for one more day before a strong system approaches for the weekend, bringing rain and snow back to the forecast.

High pressure building across the Southeast Friday will result in a day of mostly sunny skies region-wide. Temperatures will still be on the cooler side, with highs only topping off in the low to mid 50s and 30s in the mountains.

The weather will remain chilly, but dry, for Friday night plans with an increasing chance for flurries in the mountains into Saturday morning as high level clouds begin to push in from the west.

A warm front pushing eastward through Tennessee and Kentucky will allow for snow showers to develop in the mountains by early Saturday morning and eventually mix with rain. Accumulations will be light, with most areas likely picking up a half an inch or less.

The Piedmont should remain mainly dry, but mostly cloudy, through the day Saturday with only a small chance for light showers by the afternoon as the front briefly stalls across the area. Daytime highs will be around average, topping off in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Things start to get interesting Saturday night into Sunday. A low pressure system developing across the Southern Plains will push across the Tar Heel state sometime on Sunday. The timing and exact track of this system, however, remains uncertain.

What is certain is that Sunday will be a rainy day region-wide, with snow likely mixing in across the High Country by Sunday evening.

If this system lingers into Monday and tracks farther south, even the northern Piedmont could be looking at some kind of rain/snow mix by early Monday. Stay tuned for updates!
