CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is one of 20 attorney generals signing an open letter to the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, criticizing proposed changes to the laws regulating student debt forgiveness in the case of fraud.

Stein said the changes could result in defrauded students, like the ones who attended Charlotte School of Law, paying thousands of dollars in federal student loans.

Stein would not rule out a lawsuit to stop the new regulations.

The department of education declined to comment.
