CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The City of Charlotte will not offer a settlement to the family of Keith Scott who was shot and killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Brentley Vinson in September 2016.

Justin Bamberg, who's representing Scott's family, said the city didn't give them a counter offer. In response, they're getting ready to file a civil lawsuit against the City of Charlotte and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Bamberg couldn't share the exact details about the proposed settlement, but he says it was a "reasonable" amount based on facts and circumstances.

Scott's death sparked days of protests across charlotte and last year, CMPD said officer Brentley Vinson acted lawfully during the shooting and wouldn't face any internal discipline.

Bamberg says this has been a very emotional and difficult process for Scott's widow Rakeyia and his children which is why he says they wanted to settle this matter without litigation.

“And we were hopeful that we would be able to negotiate with the city to bring some closure to Rakeyia and her kids as well as close a very painful chapter in history for the City of Charlotte," Bamberg said.

A spokesperson with the City of Charlotte says they respect the Scott family's right to take this matter to court. Bamberg says a lawsuit will be filed soon.
