WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The chemical GenX has been found in rainwater.

According to a presentation, samples collected by researchers at UNCW show a trace amount of the compound is present in precipitation.

The sample was taken at a UNCW collection station. However there are no details on when it was taken.

The news comes as the state's environmental leaders say they are delaying penalties against Chemours for the GenX discharge into the Cape Fear River.

Environmental Secretary Shelia Holman says officials are waiting until they are confident a case will stand up in court.
