CHARLOTTE -- The city of Charlotte is still evaluating the request for proposals to host the 2020 Republican National Convention.

The RNC is expected to be smaller than the DNC. It had a $188.4 million economic impact in Cleveland in 2016 according to Destination Cleveland, compared to the DNC's $230.9 million economic impact in Philadelphia.

Charlotte City Councilman Ed Driggs said officials are contacting past host cities and examining how Charlotte handled the DNC in 2012 to fine tune its bid.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority is taking the lead on submitting Charlotte's bid which is due Feb. 28.

“We’re working with the City and other partners to evaluate the potential of submitting a proposal for the 2020 RNC. We classify events like the RNC as a strategic event for our community. These types of events not only generate substantial economic impact, but also create extensive awareness for our destination by putting us on a national stage," CRVA CEO Tom Murray said.
