CHARLOTTE -- A 'Cost of Living' report put out by the Charlotte Chamber says that the Queen City still has a lower cost of living than most large cities.

The report says that Charlotte is 10th least expensive city among the largest 40 metro areas in the country. On the Cost of Living index, Charlotte is at 96.2. 

When up against other cities in the South, Charlotte came in as less expensive than Raleigh (96.4), Nashville (96.7), Atlanta (99.0) and Dallas (102.1).

The cost of living index was calculated by using prices of goods in six categories – groceries, health care, housing, miscellaneous goods and services, transportation and utilities.

San Antonio topped the list, with a Cost of Living index at 88.1.

Here are average costs in Charlotte:

  • Apartment Housing (monthly 2 bed apt, unfurnished with no utilities) $1,061
  • Purchasing a house (2,400 square ft. home on 8,000 square ft. lot with utilities) $267,863
  • Monthly Energy Cost $154.11
  • Phone (private residential line) $31.00
  • Doctor visit (general practitioner's exam) $102.91
  • Dentist visit (adult cleaning visit) $113.63
