CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte is apparently feeling the love as we round the corner to Valentine’s Day. Grocery delivery service Instacart ranks the Queen City number 5 for romance based on certain search terms on their app and website.

Chocolatier and Twenty Degrees owner Casey Hickey said, "I think Charlotteans really appreciate good food and good wine. So based on those searches, I’m not surprised."

And despite the holiday falling on Wednesday, Shelly Boyd says staffers at the Charlotte Flower Market are as busy as ever, putting together a big chunk of orders that’ll end up in cubicles on the big day.

"[They’re] starting at 6 a.m. right now and working until 7, 8 o’clock at night," said Boyd of her crew. Such high volume, really hard to keep up!"

But with all things beautiful and sweet, they come with a bottom line. The National Retail Federation stated Americans are spending $19.6 billion this year. The average consumer shells out $143 to spoil their sweetheart.

Hickey explained what her customers buy, "Could be $50-75 dollars if they’re doing chocolate. If it's a wine and chocolate gift could be upwards of a couple hundred dollars."

Additionally, Boyd said Charlotte residents feel a bit fancy when it comes to purchases.

"They love high end flowers. Especially in wholesale. We have requests for peonies. You can’t get peonies anywhere else," Boyd added.

NRF said the younger crowd, Milennials and Generation Z, buy Valentine’s Day presents for their pets, spend a little bit on themselves, and prefer to celebrate the holiday with friends.
