If you have been thinking this winter has been a good bit colder than last winter, you're right.

The latest stats just released from the State Climate Office of North Carolina show last month was the 11th coldest January on record for the state. That is based on the statewide average temperature and records that date back to 1895.

The average statewide temperature for January 2018 was about five degrees colder than the average from 1981 to 2010. It was also about ten degrees colder than the statewide average from January 2017.

The coldest temperatures for the month were felt around and just after the new year. That's when several locations around North Carolina set new records for the longest stretch of temperatures below freezing.

According to the State Climate Office, those records were set in Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Elizabeth City, Hatteras and Jacksonville.

The frigid January weather comes just after a very warm 2017. It was the sixth warmest year on record for the state.
