CHARLOTTE -- A wanted suspect is dead after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say he opened fire at officers at police department headquarters in uptown Charlotte just before 11 p.m. Thursday.

They say the probation and parole officers were briefing in the parking lot when Jonathan Bennett, who was wanted for killing 24-year-old Brittany White earlier Thursday, ambushed and began shooting at them.

Bennett was killed when officers returned fire.

Officer Casey Shue was shot in a leg but is expected to be OK. She was recently named the officer of the month back in August. She joined the force in 2014.

Two other officers are on administrative leave. CMPS says Officers Jeffrey Zederbaum and Jared Decker fired their weapons during the shootout.

Police say White, who was the mother of Bennett's child, was shot in a home on Carlyle Drive and fled with their 2-month-old daughter.

The girl was later found unharmed.
