VALDESE -- Teacher Tim Barnsback noticed a change in one of his sixth grade students.

“We started to make some connections between the students home life and behavior and what was happening at school, ” he said.

The student didn't have a bed at home and wasn't really sleeping. Barnsback says he had to do something so he raised money and bought the student a bed, blankets, and pillows. But not long after he received requests from multiple families asking for help.

That’s why he started One Head One Bed

“Buying fixed beds does not help these kids because they don't know where they will be sleeping from one night to the next,” he said.

He started working with Disc-o-bed. These beds can be taken apart put in a backpack and transported daily. It even works for when there is more than one child in a home.

“There is another  piece that slides in and you just take the bed and sit it on top of each other,” he said.

They can also be turned into a couch to sit on.

The need is so much bigger then this school or even this county. That’s why he hopes to raise enough money to give beds out in every county in western North Carolina.

Homeless doesn’t just mean living in a shelter or in a car. It's not having a fixed home that you sleep in every night.

Last year, there were 85 homeless students in Burke County alone, 30,000 in North Carolina and 1.3 million nationwide.

Barnsback says he doesn't plan to stop until he gives out as many beds as he can.
