Brutally cold air remains in place around the region today following one of the coldest January 1 on record.

Highs across the mountains, foothills, piedmont, and even some coastal areas were below freezing, and then temperatures tumbled into the single digits and teens this morning. Some mountains spots were even below zero this morning.

Today, the cold continues with highs struggling to make it into the lower 30s in the piedmont and upper 20s in the mountains, in spite of full sun. Lows will drop into the teens tonight.

An area of low pressure will then organize west of the Bahamas late tonight, and that low pressure will bring an icy mixture to northern Florida and southern Georgia by daybreak Wednesday. From there, the shield of precipitation will lift northward through the eastern Carolinas by later Wednesday and Wednesday night.

This looks to be a significant winter storm for locations near I-95 over to the coast. A big question remains as to how far west the shield of snow will make it into the interior Carolinas. It is possible that the snow could make it as far west as the eastern portions of the Charlotte and Triad viewing areas, but that is somewhat unlikely. We will continue to refine the forecast moving forward, but for most of us, it's a cold and dry forecast.

Speaking of cold, we are not even close to being finished with the arctic air. High temps will struggle to get to freezing in the piedmont Thursday through Saturday, and look for more teens for lows. As we saw this morning, some single digits are possible in the coldest spots.

Stay warm!
