CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The morning commute on to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune may now take a little longer.

Beginning this week, gate guards will take a few extra seconds to physically and visually inspect each and every Defense Department authorized identification card.

Previously, guards did not have to physically take IDs from drivers.

The change is all in an effort to tighten security by enforcing stricter base entry procedures.

This new policy means drivers can expect a slowdown in traffic, especially during peak hours.

Traffic flow is expected to improve over time.

Until then, each lane of the busiest gates will have two guards checking IDs during the morning commute.
