RALEIGH -- Former Wake County Register of Deeds Laura Riddick was indicted Tuesday on charges of stealing more than $900,000.

She turned herself in to authorities Wednesday morning and made her first appearance before a magistrate.

Friends and family were with Riddick and she appeared calm as she made her way inside and did not make any comment.

Riddick faces six counts of embezzlement by a public officer.

Court documents state Riddick took the money between 2010 and 2017 when she resigned.

As part of a pre-trial release, the state placed a property bond on Riddick's home.

The State Bureau of Investigation analysis started in March after an audit ordered by Wake County officials revealed large amounts of money was missing from the register of deeds office.

Three former employees also face embezzlement charges.

Investigators found a total of $2.3 million could not be accounted for between the four employees.

Deputy Director of the Register of Deeds Luther Snyder told Spectrum News that the office has safeguards in place to prevent activity like this from happening again. He also said they want to work to restore the public's trust.

Court documents show Riddick will appear in court again on Dec. 18.
