KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. – A suspect is dead after being shot by officers following a two-state chase Thursday morning.

Authorities say the chase started in Gaston County when an officer began pursuit of a vehicle believed to be connected with a hit-and-run.

The vehicle, which was driven by 26-year-old Matthew Whitley, of Gastsonia, crossed the border into Clover, South Carolina, returned to North Carolina and the chase then ended in Kings Mountain near Branch Street.

The State Bureau of Investigation says that's where Kings Mountain officers Chris Tate and Joshua Bryant shot Whitley after he exited his vehicle and began firing at officers.

The SBI is examining body camera and dash camera footage of the incident.

Agents will then present the facts of the case to the district attorney.

According to the SBI, Whitley was released from prison in January 2016 after serving nine months following his conviction for possession of a firearm as a felon.
