INDIAN TRAIL -- After nearly six hours working in the cold, about 400 volunteers assembled and delivered one thousand boxes of Thanksgiving food to families in need.

Common Heart's Great Turkey Countdown is a heartwarming tradition that's helped families year after year.

When it started in 2007, Executive Director Keith Adams set a goal of distributing about 100 turkeys. Now, their goal has increased to 1,000.

Adams said the Great Turkey Countdown helps to make sure families in need enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thursday. “When I made phone calls recently to talk to folks, I mean you get tears, you know, there are a lot of things because people just really feel the sense of love when you do something like this,” he said.

In the video, reporter Yoojin Cho speaks with some volunteers about their small contribution making a big impact on people's lives.

If you're looking for ways to help others this holiday season, Adams says find a food pantry that serves your neighborhood and donate to them.
