CHARLOTTE -- If you're looking for a new restaurant to try with a unique piece of Charlotte history, Zeppelin in Historic South End is a good choice.

  • Zeppelin opened in January of 2018 and is located in historic South End
  • The concept of the restaurant is based on Thomas Edison's ties to Charlotte
  • Popular dishes include lamb ribs, buttermilk poached kettle fried chicken and Maine lobster with avocado toast

The Concept

Zeppelin is locally-owned by two North Carolinians, Jonathan Swope and Jonathan Tee.

The restaurant, which opened in early January of this year, is named after the German air ship the Zeppelin, flown in the early 1900s.

The restaurant offers a modern twist with a little bit of Charlotte history.

According to Zeppelin's owners, Thomas Edison himself spent time in South End, Charlotte, at the turn of the century where he attempted to separate gold from the area's rich soil, using harnessed electricity. Edison met Edward Dilworth Latta, and the two built the city's first railway from South End to Dilworth.

Zeppelin invites customers to "join us, on our Zeppelin in the sky, while we use the gold from our soil to create great food and whimsy cocktails, in historic South End, where it all began."

The Food

The menu offers a wide range, included bread made in house, hand-crafted cocktails and Southern-inspired dishes such as buttermilk poached kettle fried chicken, Carolina collards & apples and "the Hermitage," a dish with Brunswick stew, eastern Carolina pulled pork and confit pork cheek hush puppies. The menu also offers seafood selections such as Maine lobster & avocado toast as well as Maine lobster mac and cheese.
