RALEIGH -- Weddings are a time to join two families as one.  But they've also become a production for those you're closest to to enjoy.  Wedding website The Knot, estimates that in 2016, the average wedding in the U.S. cost more than $35,000.  So knowing what step to take once you're engaged are vital to saving money, and having the dream wedding you or your family member desires. 

Our Caroline Blair is going In Depth with a wedding planning expert over the next four weeks, for a look at all the steps you need to take to prepare for your big day.  For this segment, she sat down with Diane Tighe, Director of Catering & Conference Services at Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club and JB Duke Hotel to ask, what happens after you're engaged.  She offers the following tips: 

Decide who will be a decision-maker and on your planning team

  • Enlist the core group of people who will help/support you along the way (family/friends)
  • Make sure everyone’s on the same page and recommends keeping this group small

Decide what style of wedding do you wish to have. 

  • Discuss budget and time of year
  • Decide on the type of wedding planner
  1. Someone who will help on day of one 
  2. Someone who will just handle details the day of, which is growing in popularity 

Decide what type of ceremony do you want 

  • Reception venue – location (church versus off site), seating capacity, what’s included, etc. 

Start putting together your wedding binder 

  • Houses contracts, vision ideas, rules/regulations and more. Can bring to all appointments
