A proposal in the General Assembly for two North Carolina towns could have statewide implications.

The Towns of Matthews and Mint Hill are asking for the authority to apply to start their own charter schools. The schools would be separate from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and be run by the towns.

But CMS leaders say the schools would be expensive for the towns to run. In a study released today by CMS, the school system raised a number of questions, from using property taxes to fund the schools to how charter school teachers would be classified.

Rep. Bill Brawley, (R) Mecklenburg County, is pushing the measure. He says he is concerned that CMS is not adequately addressing issues in suburban communities. He says this measure could be a potential solution, and that the concerns CMS raises in its report will be addressed in new legislation.
