Jeff spent his early years in Ohio, and then moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as a teenager when his father, Dick Crum, became head coach of the University of North Carolina football team. Jeff learned broadcasting from the ground up. His first job was as a cameraman on his father’s sports show. He also worked on the Dean Smith Coach’s Show.

Jeff has his dad to thank for his interest in meteorology. Coach Crum was a weather forecaster in the Air Force Reserve in the late 50s. He became more seriously interested in his father's field in the early 80s while Coach Crum was obtaining his private pilot’s license.

A National Weather Association-certified meteorologist, Jeff joined Spectrum News before launch after five years at WALB in Albany, Georgia, where he was the morning and noon meteorologist and co-host of "Today in Georgia," a nationally top-rated morning show. Jeff also worked as a meteorologist for ABC-25 in Columbia, South Carolina.

After receiving his bachelor's degree in public relations at Appalachian State University, Jeff earned a master's degree from the University of South Carolina.

Here are five other things you might not know about Jeff:

  1. I spent a summer in the late 80s teaching hang-gliding at Jockey's Ridge along the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
  2. While a student at Appalachian State, I become a certified in back country rescue. I held that certification for two years.
  3. I’m pretty darn good at cooking Carolina Q - vinegar based sauce, of course. I bake and I garden.
  4. On the "less than normal side," I like to walk old cemeteries and read the headstones. There can be a fascinating historical record of the region revealed when you do.
  5. I have a counseling background that covers a couple of areas: crisis management and working with individuals and families during the end of life process.
