CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Almost every police officer has had the experience of getting called to the scene of a family argument that's gotten out of control.

  • Helping train officers to be certified for the Crisis Intervention Team is Carla Carlisle from the National Alliance on Mental Health
  • Carlisle suffered a miscarriage when she was younger, but would adopt three sons from troubled homes to give them a place of comfort and safety
  • From there, she has used her experience to educate people about the foster system and mental health

Helping train officers to be certified for the Crisis Intervention Team is Carla Carlisle from the National Alliance on Mental Health.

However, it's not the kind of place you would have found Carlisle a few years ago. In fact, it's a position she fell into accidentally.

Carlisle suffered a miscarriage when she was younger. She and her husband had fertility issues, which is why she decided to foster.

Carlisle would take in three sons and give them a place of comfort and safety.

From there, she has used her experience to educate people about the foster system and mental health, even publishing a book about her experience with the foster care system.

And though she may not have the family she once thought, she wouldn't change a thing.
