AUSTIN, Texas – The Austin Independent School District board is set to vote on proposals to add nurses to all school campuses on Monday.

Right now, nurses are spread thin across the district's 130 schools. AISD has one full-time registered nurse at campuses with at least 750 students.

The services will cost $7.1 million, which is the same as previous years. However, it will not staff all 130 campuses with nurses. There will 75 full-time nurses and 48 clinical assistants.

Smaller AISD schools either balance a part-time nurse with a health assistant, or a full-time health assistant and a nurse who offers treatment through video conference.

More than two decades ago, Seton partnered with AISD to help provide health services. In the past years, Seton has subsidized $1.8 million to keep nurses on campuses.

However, the funding has been challenging due to the state's recapture law.

"It actually gives half a billion or more back to the state for the property taxes it raises and so it has a real financial challenge to fund these services," said Greg Hartman, chief of external and academic affairs for Seton Hospitals.

Seton will likely to submit a proposal, but the hospital said it is open to partnering with another district.
